Prof. Dr. Harun-Ur-Rashid is a pioneering figure in nephrology in Bangladesh, having dedicated over four decades to advancing kidney disease treatment, research, and education. His career began in 1981 after returning from the United Kingdom with postgraduate training in nephrology and a PhD from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Since then, he has been instrumental in transforming nephrology services in Bangladesh from basic clinical care to sophisticated transplantation programs.

His contributions to medical education are substantial, having established postgraduate courses in nephrology at IPGMR under Dhaka University in 1996. Under his guidance, doctors receive MD qualifications in nephrology, with training extending to international students from Nepal. Dr. Rashid has supervised numerous postgraduate dissertations for Fellowship examinations of the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) and guided over 50 MD theses in nephrology.

Prof. Dr. Harun-Ur-Rashid’s research output is impressive, with 156 published articles in recognized journals. He has served as editor for prestigious publications including the Bangladesh Renal Journal from 1981-2009 and the Journal of Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research from 1986-1998, where he was the founder editor. His research has significantly contributed to understanding and treating kidney diseases in the South Asian context.

His leadership extends beyond clinical practice to institutional development. In 1998, he was appointed project director to establish the National Institute of Kidney Disease and Urology in Bangladesh, becoming its founder director from 2002-2003. In 2003, he established the Kidney Foundation of Bangladesh and became its founder president, creating a not-for-profit hospital dedicated to treating kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation for poor and needy people.

Prof. Dr. Harun-Ur-Rashid has played a crucial role in policy development, taking the lead in establishing the Nephrology, Urology and Transplant society of South Asian Regional countries (SAARC) in 1999 in Dhaka. He became the founder secretary general of this society and later served as its president in 2005. His advocacy efforts contributed to framing the “Organ Act law in Bangladesh,” which was passed in parliament in July 1999.

His contributions have been widely recognized through numerous awards and honors. He received the gold medal from the Association of Physicians of Bangladesh (SGM Chowdhury memorial oration) in 1998, the SAARC award in 2005, and the Mercantile Bank Foundation award in 2012. In 2013, he was given recognition by the Bangladesh Medical Association of North America for his significant contribution to teaching, education, and clinical services in nephrology care.

Prof. Dr. Harun-Ur-Rashid continues to serve in various leadership capacities, including as a council member of the International Society of Nephrology and co-chair of several important initiatives. He is a trustee member of the University of Science and Technology and a founder trustee of the Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences. His ongoing work with the Bangladesh Diabetic Association and the Society of Organ Transplantation in Bangladesh demonstrates his continued commitment to advancing healthcare in the country.
