Kushtia Medical College: A Brief History

Kushtia Medical College (KMC), established in 2011, is a government-run medical institution in Bangladesh aimed at addressing the country’s growing healthcare needs. Its origins trace back to a 1978–79 government plan to establish medical colleges in underserved districts, including Kushtia, though the initiative was initially halted . Decades later, the government revived the project, founding KMC alongside three other colleges (Satkhira, Gopalganj, and Kishoreganj) with an initial annual intake of 52 students, later increased to 65 .

The college began operations temporarily at the Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) in Kushtia, utilizing borrowed facilities while construction of its permanent campus along the Kushtia-Dhaka Highway commenced . Early challenges included a shortage of lecturers and reliance on MATS infrastructure for classrooms and hostels . Despite these hurdles, the college gradually expanded, transitioning to its modern campus by 2016, which now includes a 250-bed teaching hospital .

Affiliated with the University of Kushtia, KMC offers a five-year MBBS program, combining rigorous academic training with practical clinical experience. Over the years, it has grown into a key institution for medical education in western Bangladesh, contributing to regional healthcare development . Today, it stands as a testament to the government’s efforts to enhance medical education accessibility and improve healthcare services nationwide.
